Have you ever felt like a celebrity for a day? I mean like a full out, ‘My last name is Kardashian, I bleed luxury and the whole world loves me.‘ type of celebrity? Well, I certainly did after my first visit to KARMA by Erwin Gomez [1104 24th St. NW]. And if history repeats itself, this first visit definitely won’t be my last.
The moment I stepped through the glass doors, I felt like Tinseltown had pleasantly splashed me in the face. The tufted furniture, mirrored walls, marble floors and bountiful shimmer thrusted me from DC to Hollywood sanz the 4 hour flight.
The air was filled with a delightfully recognizable aroma of their signature Kai fragrance mixed with the sultry voice of Chante Moore. “Hello Ashley!” sang the sweet voices of the women behind the counter, almost in harmony. Their smiles were just as bright as the sunlight that ricochet off of the mirrored walls and onto the floor.
If this is the new DC spa scene, I was definitely going to love it.
Not a moment later, Erwin Gomez himself approached me to say hello. Everything about him was perfect. Skin, hair, nails, teeth. He is a beautiful man. So, it came at no surprise that such a place as this would be birthed by him.
Erwin offered to do my makeup after my facial. A request I couldn’t deny. And not a moment after I shared with him my excitement, I found myself laying on the most comfortable bed, facing a mirrored ceiling, waiting for my facial.
I use the term ‘facial’ extremely loosely in this context for it was much more of a dance than anything else. My aesthetician, Catherine Layrle, treated my skin as a charmed box that she wrapped and unwrapped in towels and creams with mastered timing and precision. Her careful hands and delicate fingers placed me into a trance where I began to dream of synchronized swimmers completing a stellar performance and winning the gold metal.
This sort of synchronized dance was routine to her as she is clearly is a pro. Catherine has provided top-notch skincare treatments for some of the worlds largest celebrities including: Nicole Kidman, Aretha Franklin, Annette Bening and Mrs. Stevie Wonder. And while I am not a world renowned celebrity, what an honor it was to have received a facial from the fingers of the woman that has perfected the skin of those who are.
An honor indeed.
I received the Opulence Facial, which resembles a rather basic steam facial in the beginning but ends with the gliding of an oxygen bubble, known as the Opulence Serum, over the entire surface of the skin. The application of the Opulence Serum is very reminiscent of the airbrush makeup technique. But unlike makeup, the Opulence Serum hydrates and brightens the skin with vitamins and minerals while keeping the skin fresh and clean. Amazingly after one treatment, my face was plump and supple.
The markings of a great facial had just been made.
Disappointingly, my Opulence Facial lasted only 30 minutes. Desperately, I had hoped it would be longer. But my feelings of dismay were quickly eroded by the memory of my makeup appointment with Erwin Gomez. I knew I was in for another fantastic treat. And I was ready to indulge.
