The house lights fell and the spotlight was on, shining on the one person that mattered. Taking center stage stood a 5’5 medium brown soul sister with a powerhouse voice that would serenade its way into historic success.
Fast forward 50 years, fresh off the stage of a similar performance at Radio City Music Hall, this same woman sits before me in a stylish fiery red two piece dress, a silver classic Chanel purse and a diamond ring large enough to make Harry Winston jealous.
Of course I’m speaking of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul.
How many people can say that they’ve met a Queen before? Well, I was given the chance about two weekends ago in Atlantic City where Aretha and I shared fantastic girl time. We talked about makeup and beauty. And we even took selfies!
As it turns out, I’m writing an ‘exclusive’ article for BRE Magazine in a few weeks about the Queen. So, I won’t be able to give all of the details about my experience with here here. (Sorry. I really wish that I could!) But I CAN say that Aretha is such a girls girl. And yes, a diva.
Before the interview, she checked her makeup using the camera on my iPhone as a mirror. I chucked at this because I frequently I do the same thing.
I assumed she used Bobbie Brown makeup or something very similar. But I asked her the question just to make sure.
“I don’t know what makeup I use, honey.” She said. “Maybe Fashion Fair. Yes, it’s Fashion Fair.”
Wait, What? I didn’t even know they were still selling products. But hey, whatever works.
And guess what…it was working! Aretha’s face looked as if it had been beaten with the brush of timeless beauty.
Because the camera was already facing our direction, it was only right to take a selfie.
Snap, snap, snap. We took at least ten. “I know all about selfie’s and stuff, girl.” she said. “That’s minor stuff.” True indeed. Plus, what diva doesn’t like a camera? LOL!
And what makes cellphone pics to great is the ability to review your images right then and there, something we definitely took advantage of.
While I bore the task of flipping through the pictures, Aretha selected the best ones. All of the images were approved.
“We both are beautiful!” said Aretha.
And if the Queen says so, it must be true. Glad to have her stamp of approval.
